Umuahia, July 13, 2024 - The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Abia State Council has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Abia State Government, citing improper endorsement by key government officials.
The NLC has issued a stern warning that it will commence an indefinite strike if the agreed three-month wage award of N15,000 is not paid by July 28, 2024.
Recall we had earlier reported that Abia State Government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Organized Labor in the state, addressing several critical labor issues. This agreement was reached following the threat of a strike set to commence on July 15th.
In contrast, a press statement addressed to the Chief of Staff to the Governor highlighted several critical concerns raised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) following a State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held to analyze the MoU.
The NLC expressed dismay that the document, signed on July 13, 2024, was not properly endorsed by key government representatives, including the Accountant General and the Commissioner for Finance. The union pointed out that only the Chief of Staff, who led the government team in the negotiations, had signed the agreement.
The SEC-in-Session Resolutions reads : “Proper Endorsement of the MoU - The SEC-in-session resolved that the aforementioned government representatives must sign the MoU to ensure its legitimacy and full commitment.
“The NLC has resolved to commence an indefinite strike if the state government fails to pay the N15,000 palliative wage award as agreed, by July 28, 2024, alongside the July salary.
“No Further Notice - After July 28, 2024, the NLC stated that there would be no further notice to the government before the commencement of the indefinite strike action.
The NLC emphasized the urgency and importance of meeting these demands to prevent industrial action that could disrupt state operations and impact workers' welfare. The union's leadership reiterated their commitment to advocating for the rights and benefits of Abia State workers and called on the government to honor the agreements made.
"We count on your camaraderie," the statement concluded, underscoring the NLC's expectation of cooperation and swift action from the state government.
