Osisioma, Abia State – In a significant political development, the Young Progressive Party (YPP) has effectively collapsed in Abia State as two of its elected lawmakers officially defected to the Labour Party (LP). The defection was marked by a rally held in Osisioma Local Government Area, where Governor Alex Otti formally welcomed the legislators.

The defectors, Hon. Fyne Ahuama representing Osisioma South, and Hon. Iheanacho Nwogu representing Osisioma North State Constituency, cited the developmental achievements under Governor Otti's leadership over the past year as their primary reason for joining the Labour Party. Both lawmakers expressed their commitment to contributing to the ongoing progress in Abia State.

During the welcoming ceremony, Governor Otti assured the new Labour Party members of his administration's dedication to improving the welfare of all Abians. He highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving the state's developmental goals and reiterated his commitment to transparent and effective governance.

Upon the inauguration of the Abia State Assembly last year, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held the majority with 11 members. The Labour Party had ten members, the YPP had two members, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) had only one member. However, the LP’s count dropped to nine members after the Court of Appeal nullified the election of Mr. Destiny Nwangwu (Aba North), while the number of PDP seats in the House increased to 12.

With the defection of the two lawmakers from the YPP to the LP, the Labour Party’s representation in the House has increased to 11 seats.

The defection of Hon. Ahuama and Hon. Nwogu is seen as a boost for the Labour Party in Abia State, strengthening its position and broadening its support base. Governor Otti's reception of the lawmakers underscores his administration's focus on inclusive development and political unity.

This event signifies a pivotal shift in Abia's political landscape. It remains to be seen how the Labour Party will leverage the added support in advancing its agenda, especially as the PDP retains a clear majority despite the defection of YPP lawmakers to the Labour Party in the Abia State Assembly.
