Abia State Governor Alex Chioma Otti recently revealed the formation of a committee to address the implementation of the new minimum wage, a move that has sparked debate about its necessity.
In a media interaction titled “Governor Otti Speaks to Abians” on Friday, Governor Otti explained that the committee's role is to devise a strategy for introducing the proposed ₦70,000 minimum wage, considering the state’s limited financial resources. The committee is tasked with ensuring that the wage increase benefits all employees, not just civil servants.
He said: “You know the minimum wage announcement was just about the minimum wage of N70,000.
“What that means is that every other person’s salary would go up.
“So, it is not just going to be minimum wage for civil servants every other salary would be adjusted accordingly.
“As we even prepare for a review of the budget after the virement, we are already making provisions for increase of salaries on the basis of the new minimum wage,” he said.
However, the decision to set up this committee raises questions about its necessity. Critics argue that the funds required to implement the new wage structure could be managed through existing channels without the need for additional bureaucratic layers.
They suggest that the Governor’s administration could directly address wage adjustments by reallocating resources and optimizing budgetary expenditures, rather than forming a new committee.
Governor Otti also provided updates on other government initiatives. He noted that plans to return civil servants to the classroom have been paused, as the administration does not wish to compel individuals who are unwilling to teach. Instead, the government is focusing on identifying qualified individuals with educational backgrounds and developing incentive packages to attract teachers to the profession.
On the matter of local government autonomy, the Governor assured that preparations are underway for elections, following the Supreme Court’s recent pronouncement. He emphasized that the state government is committed to ensuring a smooth electoral process.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the newly established committee will impact the implementation of the minimum wage and whether it will effectively address the financial challenges faced by the state.
