Abia State’s administration under Governor Alex Otti has been marred by internal discord and power struggles, culminating in the recent dismissal of Mr. Mike Akpara. Once a trusted ally of the Governor, Akpara’s fall from grace reflects deeper issues within the administration, particularly concerning the management of RAMP (Rural Access and Mobility Project) funds and his controversial handling of public salary allowances.





Mike Akpara, who developed a strong relationship with Governor Otti during their time at First Bank, was initially a central figure in the Governor’s inner circle. Their shared Aro ancestry and upbringing in Ngwa-Land, combined with Akpara’s role in managing the Governor’s affairs through Diamond Bank and into the 2023 election, positioned him as a key player in the new administration.







However, complications surrounding the RAMP funds may have been a critical factor in his recent downfall. The mismanagement and issues related to these funds seem to have played a central role in the decision to remove Akpara from his position. The intricacies and controversies related to the Rural Access and Mobility Project(RAMP) have overshadowed his earlier contributions and led to a reevaluation of his role within the government.





Adding to the turmoil, Akpara's management of the public controversy regarding his 10 million naira monthly salary and allowances was characterized by a lack of sensitivity and professionalism. His defensive approach during a public interview, seen as both arrogant and tactless, further estranged him from the public and his colleagues.






In a particularly damaging moment, Akpara reportedly expressed unfamiliarity with several figures in the SEFTAS (State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability) report during a meeting with Commissioners last week. This remark, indicating a disconnect with key financial reports and processes, was seen as a significant lapse in his responsibilities and engagement.





Following Akpara’s dismissal, Dr. Uwaoma has been appointed as his replacement. Dr. Uwaoma brings an impressive CV, and there are high expectations that his extensive experience will positively impact the management of both internal and external allocations in Abia State. Abians are hopeful that his background and expertise will address the financial management issues that have plagued the state, bringing greater transparency and accountability to the administration.







These developments underscore the internal contradictions and power struggles currently undermining Governor Otti’s administration. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges the government faces in managing public perception, internal cohesion, and effective financial oversight.
