The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed a reported attack on a Nigerian military checkpoint by suspected gunmen along the Amasiri-Owutu-edda highway in the Edda Local Government Area of the state.


The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, according to DSP Joshua Ukandu, the state's Police Public Relations Officer. 

 

Preliminary information from the Owutu Police Division indicates that a group of hoodlums launched an attack on the military checkpoint on Friday morning, the News Agency of Nigeria reports, citing the command's spokesperson.


The authorities are currently assessing the situation, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.

 

“It is not yet certain if there were casualties. The attack was carried out by suspected gunmen in the area, who operated with motorcycles,” he added.

 

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters' efforts to speak with the Director Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu on the incident were unsuccessful as he did not take calls as of the time of filing this report.
