In a prompt response to the constitutional requirement that abhors any vacuum in the judiciary, President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria. This ceremony took place at the State House Council Chambers immediately following President Tinubu's return from a brief work visit to France.
The necessity for swift action is underscored by the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who stepped down after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 on Thursday. His departure, in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution, necessitated the immediate appointment of an acting successor to ensure the continuity of judicial leadership.
President Tinubu, who cut his trip to France short for this purpose, expressed his appreciation for Justice Ariwoola's impactful leadership and contributions to Nigerian jurisprudence. In a statement released by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Tinubu commended Ariwoola's "successful public service career" and his dedication to "strengthening the fibre of the law."
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had previously recommended Justice Kekere-Ekun for the position, acknowledging her as the most senior Justice following Justice Ariwoola. The Supreme Court currently has a full complement of 21 Justices, maintaining the tradition of elevating the next most senior Justice to the Chief Justice position.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, aged 66, has a distinguished judicial career, having served in various capacities within the judiciary, including as a Justice of the Court of Appeal in Kaduna, Enugu, and Lagos divisions before her elevation to the Supreme Court on July 8, 2013. She is also the President of the International Association of Women Judges and a life Bencher.
Born on May 7, 1958, Justice Kekere-Ekun earned her law degree from the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian bar in 1981. She further enhanced her legal acumen at the London School of Economics and Political Science, earning an LL.M. in November 1983.

Her judicial journey began in Lagos as a private lawyer before her appointments as a Senior Magistrate and subsequently as a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State.
Pending Senate confirmation, Justice Kekere-Ekun's official appointment will mark her as the rightful successor to Justice Ariwoola, continuing the tradition of leadership and integrity at Nigeria's highest court.
