PDP Leaders in North East Endorse Damagum’s Leadership Amid Legal Restraints | #NwokeukwuMascot
Iliya Umar Damagum |
The leadership of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the North East, comprising Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Borno, and Yobe states, has expressed support for Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of the party. This endorsement was announced during a statement by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, who spoke on behalf of the five states.
Governor Fintiri highlighted Damagum’s leadership skills and his impact since taking over as Acting National Chairman, citing his ability to restore public confidence in the party. He called for unity within the PDP, urging members to rally behind Damagum, especially in light of a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which barred the PDP’s National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from replacing or appointing any other Chairman apart from Damagum.
“The court order is clear, and we must respect it to uphold the integrity of our party and democracy,” Fintiri stated. He further emphasized that Damagum should complete the tenure of the former Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, unless a court decision says otherwise.
Fintiri commended Damagum’s efforts, saying that his leadership has been instrumental in rebuilding the party's image and fostering trust among its members and supporters. He noted that the PDP’s performance in the North East during the 2023 general elections was unprecedented, highlighting significant victories at various levels. According to Fintiri, this success underscores the region’s strategic importance to the PDP and justifies its claim to the position of National Chairman more than any other northern zone.
The Governor’s remarks were supported by other party leaders from the region, who echoed his sentiments, describing Damagum’s tenure as a period of stability and renewed focus. They stressed the need for all party members to adhere strictly to the court's ruling, emphasizing that unity and respect for judicial decisions are essential for the party’s progress.
The Federal High Court ruling followed a legal challenge aimed at ensuring the PDP’s compliance with its internal rules and procedures. The court order specifically prevents any faction within the party or its affiliates from altering the current leadership structure until the matter is resolved. This development has placed Damagum firmly in his role, bolstering his position as the rightful leader of the PDP pending further judicial review.
The PDP in the North East has thus called on its members nationwide to uphold party discipline, respect court rulings, and support Damagum in his efforts to lead the party toward greater achievements ahead of future elections.
