The Labour Party's crises have taken another twist as a stalwart of the party, Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, who claimed to be the national publicity secretary on Sunday issued an urgent request to the Inspector General of Police to investigate Mr. Peter Obi and Governor Alex Oti for alleged impersonation and felony.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, had announced a stakeholders' meeting despite being warned after the National Working Committee's emergency meeting held earlier that he should desist from interfering in the party's affairs.

The stakeholders meeting being convened by the Governor according to insider sources was meant to be decisive for the party to correct many anomalies from the tenure of NWC members which the proponents of the meeting have said has expired due to the allegations of corruption that had ovetwhelmed the party. The stakeholders' meeting is scheduled for September 4 at the Government House in Umuahia, Abia State.

The proposed meeting will have Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi, his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed, and members of the National Working Committee in attendance. He asserted that the offices of National Chairman and National Secretary are not vacant and that Mr. Peter Obi and Governor Alex Oti's actions constitute criminal impersonation, which is punishable under Section 484 of the Criminal Code Act in Nigeria.

He gave a 72-hour ultimatum to Mr. Obi and Governor Oti to put the unconstitutional meeting on hold, failure for which a formal petition will be written to the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services for fraud, impersonation, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace in Nigeria.

He reiterated that the actions of Mr. Peter Obi and Governor Alex Oti are unconstitutional, ultra vires, irresponsible, and a national disgrace. He urged them to acquaint themselves with the party's constitution before taking decisions.

A former National Treasurer of the party, Oluchi Okpara, had called on leaders of the party to convene an emergency meeting to save the party from an impending disaster. Okpara's call came on the heels of a reply by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to an application for a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the monitored report of the LP Convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, which the commission declared it did not monitor and hence cannot report on.

According to Okpara, the tenure of the National Chairman, Julius Abure, elapsed on June 9, 2024, and any actions taken by him and other members of the National Working Committee are null and void.

She urged elected members of the party, including Governor Alex Otti, Senators, and House of Representatives members, to come together to ensure the party does not die by convoking a NEC meeting to deliberate on the process that will lead to an inclusive convention.
