In a recent analysis of Abia State's 2023 budget, alarming figures have emerged regarding the cost of running the Governor’s office under the current administration of Governor Alex C. Otti. Abians have expressed outrage over the staggering expenses, which have raised concerns about financial mismanagement in the state.






According to data from the Budget Implementation Reports of Q1 and Q2 of 2023, the cost of running the Governor's office amounted to a whopping N35.2 billion, surpassing the total personnel cost for all civil servants in the state, which stood at N25.97 billion. This means that Governor Otti spent approximately N10 billion more on maintaining his office than was allocated for the salaries of the entire Abia workforce. 






Further analysis shows that out of the state's total revenue of N219.2 billion, Governor Otti allocated 16.06% of it to fund the operations of his office. This figure does not even account for other large sums purportedly set aside for various non-existent projects, which are rumored to run into the tens of billions of naira.






In comparison, former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s expenditure on his office in the first six months of 2023 amounted to N2.09 billion. However, it is important to note that this figure could be higher, as the data extracted only covers Q1 and Q2, meaning some expenses may not have been captured.







The contrast between the two administrations is glaring. While Ikpeazu’s expenditures seem modest in comparison, Governor Otti has spent over N30 billion on his office in just six months. The lavish spending has sparked outrage, with many Abians questioning the priorities of the current administration amid economic hardship and dwindling resources.






The news has been met with widespread condemnation, with critics labeling the situation as a "financial disaster" for the state. "Hell has come," one observer exclaimed, noting that the excessive spending on the Governor’s office while other areas, such as civil servant salaries and public infrastructure, remain underfunded, is both reckless and unsustainable.
