A member of the House of Representatives representing Ukwa East/West Federal Constituency of Abia State, Chris Nkwonta, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made on the floor of the House during plenary by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Wednesday in Abuja.

Reacting to the defection, Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Madaki, citing a section of the constitution, called for Nkwonta’s seat to be declared vacant.

In response, Speaker Abbas acknowledged Madaki’s concerns but pointed out that he was aware of a faction within the PDP.
