Senator Austin Akobundu, representing Abia Central, has called for peace following a renewed border clash between the people of Ariam Eleuelu in Ariam Usaka, Ikwuano LGA of Abia State, and the Obot Akara community in Akwa Ibom State. The latest outbreak of violence claimed one life and resulted in the destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

In a statement issued on Sunday night, Akobundu urged both communities to sheathe their swords and embrace peace, emphasizing the need for unity and harmonious coexistence. He assured his constituents that he would escalate the matter to the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who represents Akwa Ibom North-West, which includes Obot Akara LGA.

“I will table this issue before the Senate for urgent deliberation. The Senate will do everything within its powers to restore lasting peace in the affected areas,” Akobundu pledged.

The senator also stressed the importance of fostering brotherhood and good neighborliness, urging all parties involved to see one another as one people. He further promised to collaborate with relevant government agencies at all levels to ensure peace and the full restoration of normalcy in the communities.

Acknowledging the swift response of security agencies, Akobundu commended the Mayor of Ikwuano LGA, Anthony Nzeribe Nwaubani, for his prompt mobilization of security forces to contain the crisis.

Expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased, he prayed for the repose of the victim’s soul and called on the governments of Abia and Akwa Ibom states to take decisive action in resolving the boundary dispute and preventing future clashes.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, told DAILY POST on Monday: “Yes, we are aware. There was a clash, but we swiftly intervened. The situation is now calm, and normalcy has been restored.”

Similarly, Akobundu’s media aide, Jude Ndukwe, confirmed the senator’s commitment to liaising with Akpabio and other stakeholders to achieve lasting peace between both communities.
