APC’s Ukachukwu Defeats Labour Party in Peter Obi’s Polling Unit | #NwokeukwuMascot

 News

The Labour Party (LP) suffered a major setback on Saturday as its governorship candidate, George Moghalu, lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, in the polling unit of the party’s 2023 presidential flag bearer, Mr. Peter Obi.

At polling unit 019, Agulu Ward 11, Anaocha Local Government Area, where Obi cast his vote, the APC candidate polled 73 votes, defeating Labour Party’s Moghalu, who garnered 57 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the ruling party in the state, came third with 38 votes.

The result came as a surprise to many political observers, considering Obi’s stronghold in the area. The former Anambra governor had secured over 95 percent of the votes from the same locality during the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking after casting his vote, Obi expressed disappointment over the growing trend of vote buying in Nigerian elections.

“It is sad that bad governance is fuelling vote buying and selling,” Obi lamented. “Reports I’m getting suggest that votes are being traded for between ₦15,000 and ₦30,000. This is not how democracy should work.”

Meanwhile, the APC candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, also recorded victory in his own polling unit. At polling unit 12, ward 2, Umudiala village, Osumenyi, Nnewi South LGA, Ukachukwu scored 108 votes, while Charles Soludo, the incumbent governor and APGA’s candidate, managed just four votes. Other political parties failed to secure any votes, while two votes were declared invalid.

The results were officially announced by Maduka Evan, the presiding officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the polling unit.

Ukachukwu, who had earlier expressed optimism about his chances in the election, said the outcome reflected the people’s desire for change and credible leadership in Anambra.

In contrast, the LP candidate, Moghalu, raised concerns about what he described as “widespread vote buying,” despite the heavy presence of security personnel across polling centers. He also lost in his own polling unit at Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi North LGA, further compounding the Labour Party’s disappointing showing in the election.

The outcome of the election in Peter Obi’s polling unit is expected to generate political discussions across the state, particularly given the significance of the location and the party’s previous dominance in the area.

Analysts say the results underscore a possible shift in voter sentiment and the growing competitiveness among major political parties in Anambra’s political landscape.
