At least 111 defilement cases have been recorded by the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos State within the period of three months – between April and June 2023.

This was confirmed by the command’s Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, adding that the police are bothered about the state's rising number of defilement cases.

He stated that 14 rape instances and 56 incidences of domestic violence were reported within the same time period.

He went on to say that no fewer than 99 people were charged in court over the time period for defilement related offences.

During this period, a 26-year-old automobile technician popularly known as rewire, Sunday George, was also sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for defiling his neighbour’s 12-year-old daughter.

The judge handed down the verdict after finding George guilty of the offence of defilement of a minor in May.

Justice Abiola Soladoye ruled that the prosecution proved the charge of defilement against the convict beyond a reasonable doubt.

The trial judge held that the prosecution had proved the three ingredients of defilement which are that the child was underage, that the defendant had sex with her and that the consent of the child is immaterial was proven by the prosecution.

The judge stated that the convict had sex with the minor repeatedly whenever he called her to come and watch a film on his phone in his room.
