  Politics      Abia State PDP members on a road rally during the last general elections.   The Abia State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in a statement signed by  Hon. Elder Abraham Amah, the party’s Vice Chairman/Acting State Publicity Secretary has accused Destiny Nwagwu, a sacked member of the Abia State House of Assembly, of attempting to incite the public against the federal government and judiciary. The allegations came after Nwagwu mobilized his supporters in Aba to protest the Appeal Court’s decision to replace him with the PDP candidate, Hon. Aaron Uzodike. Recall that the Appeal Court in Lagos ruled that Nwagwu could not prove his membership  of the Labour Party, thus disqualifying him from contesting the election. In response, Nwagwu was seen in a video carrying a placard in major streets of Aba, with the words  “Aba People, Your Mandate has been Stolen by the Appeal Court,” urging the people to resist the judgment.    News      Olukayode Ariwoola    The chief justice of Nigeria (CJN),  Olukayode Ariwoola, says the judiciary would not replace the law with sentiments and emotions of the public.  Ariwoola spoke on Monday  at a special session  to mark a new legal year and swearing-in ceremony of new senior advocates of Nigeria (SAN). Admonishing justices, the CJN said: “The law remains the law, no matter whose interest is involved”. “In all we do, as interpreters of the law, we should endeavour to sever the strings of emotion from logic and assumption from fact,” Ariwoola said. “We should never be overwhelmed by the actions or loud voices of the mob or crowd and now begin to confuse law with sentiment or something else in deciding our cases. “Nevertheless, unnecessary and unwarranted utterances are bound to embarrass not only others, but the judge himself; thus what should be asked, should be asked, and what should not be asked, should be avoided.” He also asked justices to be above board and to be

  Politics        Chief Chijioke Uruakpa   Lagos, Nigeria - In a landmark ruling today, the Court of Appeal in Lagos upheld the election victory of Hon Chief Chijioke Uruakpa as the House of Assembly member for Ugwunagbo State Constituency. The court dismissed the petition filed by Mr Iheanacho Wabara of the Labour Party, citing a lack of merit. The ruling comes after a long and contentious legal battle that followed the general elections held earlier this year. Mr Wabara, who contested the election against Hon Chief Chijioke Uruakpa, had challenged the outcome, alleging irregularities and electoral malpractices. However, after carefully reviewing the evidence presented before it, the Court of Appeal determined that Mr Wabara’s petition lacked merit and upheld the decision of the lower tribunal, which had earlier affirmed Hon Chief Chijioke Uruakpa’s victory.   News     Sylvester Madu.   Unknown gunmen have reportedly attacked a movie location where Nigerian Nollywood Actor, Sylvester Madu, was invited, killing four people and injured over 10 others. The Nigerian actor, who narrowly escaped death by whiskers reportedly travelled to Bamenda in Cameroon on November 23, 2023, in order to work on a film project. He was, however, attacked on Saturday night. According to witnesses, the Cameroonian fans had greeted him with great enthusiasm, unable to contain their excitement at seeing the actor. But on Saturday, November 25, at around 10 pm, some unidentified gunmen stormed a drinking joint where Madu and a few others were hanging out, causing chaos among those in attendance. It was discovered that the attack claimed the lives of four people and left over ten with serious injuries.   Politics      File Image.   In a landmark ruling, the Appeal Court has dismissed the petition filed by Innocent Uruakpa of the Labour Party, upholding the election victory of Hon. Iheonunekwu Collins (Ochake) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Isialangwa North State Constituency. The court’s decision brings an end to a lengthy legal battle and solidifies Hon. Iheonunekwu Collins’ position as the rightful winner. The Isialangwa North State Constituency election, held on March 11, 2023,  saw Hon. Iheonunekwu Collins secure the trust and support of the majority of voters. However, his victory was challenged by Innocent Uruakpa, who alleged irregularities and electoral malpractices during the election process. After careful examination and legal proceedings, the Appeal Court has now ruled in favor of Hon. Iheonunekwu Collins, dismissing all claims made by Innocent Uruakpa.   Politics    Hon Destiny Akaraka  The Appeal court siting in Lagos has sacked the member representing Aba North state Constituency in the Abia state House of Assembly Hon Destiny Akaraka Nwagwu.  The Panel held that Hon Destiny Nwagwu could not prove in all the evidences that he was a Member of Labour Party before the election. The three-man Appeal Panel also held that Hon Destiny Nwagwu was invalidly nominated and was not qualified to contest the election.   Politics   File Image    In a pre-recorded speech aired today, Shaibu, who has been the deputy governor of the state since 2016, said he would run for the office of the number one in the state on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). After his official declaration, Shaibu launched his campaign office in Benin City, the state capital, at an event crowded with party supporters in branded accoutrements. “After all the consultation we have made, we needed to now make the answer to our consultation known to our people. And the answer is clear: they have asked me to run,” Shaibu said. The 53-year-old politician said he has put his life on the line for the development and growth of the state and he was determined to make the South-South state great again. A viral clip captured the moment Davido, having serenaded the crowd with his timeless tunes, engaged in capturing selfies with the enthralled audience. Another video showed moment Cameroonian fans exited the venue, with some expressing curiosity about why the show’s organizers chose to have Davido perform first.   News     File Image.  A coup attempt by unidentified gunmen who tried to break into the armoury in Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, has been reported. Reports say due to the ugly situation currently in Freetown, the Sierra Leone Government slammed a curfew until further notice. The government said in a statement that the security forces are in control of the situation. “In the early hours of Sunday, some unidentified individuals attempted to break into the military armoury at the Wilberforce barracks. They have been rebuffed,” information minister Chernor Bah said in the statement . This comes a few months after a group of military officers in Gabon announced seized power in the African nation. Udefuna Chukwudi of the Labour Party, who represented Ezeagu Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly. The court cited the lawmaker’s inability to meet constitutional literacy requirements as grounds for the decision. As a result, Rt. Hon. Chima Obieze of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been declared the rightful winner of the March 18th election following a successful appeal. The court cited their disobedience to court orders and lack of political structure as the reasons for their removal. Professor John Wade, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed his belief that the PDP brought this upon themselves. He criticized the party for shooting itself in the foot and disregarding valuable advice from elder statesmen. Wade also mentioned that the PDP underestimated the law and the changing dynamics of politics, which ultimately led to their downfall.   News    File Image    Governor Alex Otti of   Abia State   has abandoned a newly built multi-billion naira Government House in Umuahia, the state capital, since assuming office about six months ago. He is running the government from his country home outside of Umuahia, according to findings by PREMIUM TIMES. The  Independent National Electoral Commission  had, on 22 March,  declared  Mr Otti of the Labour Party as the winner of the 18 March governorship election in the state. He was sworn in as the fifth elected governor of Abia State on 29 May. The administration of the former governor of the state, Okezie Ikpeazu, had commissioned the new Government House on 28 May, a day before the end of his tenure.
