The Abia State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in a statement signed by Hon. Elder Abraham Amah, the party’s Vice Chairman/Acting State Publicity Secretary has accused Destiny Nwagwu, a sacked member of the Abia State House of Assembly, of attempting to incite the public against the federal government and judiciary. The allegations came after Nwagwu mobilized his supporters in Aba to protest the Appeal Court’s decision to replace him with the PDP candidate, Hon. Aaron Uzodike.
Recall that the Appeal Court in Lagos ruled that Nwagwu could not prove his membership of the Labour Party, thus disqualifying him from contesting the election. In response, Nwagwu was seen in a video carrying a placard in major streets of Aba, with the words “Aba People, Your Mandate has been Stolen by the Appeal Court,” urging the people to resist the judgment.
The statement partly reads: “The attention of the Abia PDP has been drawn to attempts by the sacked Labour Party member of the Abia State House of Assembly, Destiny Nwagwu to incite the public against the federal government of Nigeria led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the federal Judiciary.
“Moments after he was sacked by the Appeal Court sitting in Lagos and replaced with the PDP candidate, Hon. Aaron Uzodike on the ground that he could not prove his membership of the Labour Party and therefore was not qualified to contest the election, Destiny Nwagwu quickly mobilised his supporters in Aba to protest the judgement of the Appeal Court with inciting words capable of disturbing the peace of Aba and Abia State. The sacked member was seen in major streets of Aba carrying a placard boldly written with words as “Aba People, Your Mandate has been Stolen by the Appeal Court” and asking the people to resist the judgment.”
The Abia PDP further criticized Nwagwu’s actions, stating that it is a common practice for the Labour Party to accuse the federal government of interfering with the judiciary whenever it loses a case. The party argues that this behavior is unacceptable and undermines the judiciary, which is the last hope of the common man and a vital pillar of democracy. Fortunately, the people of Aba showed discernment by rejecting Nwagwu’s call for violence, allowing him to bear the consequences of his loss alone. The Abia PDP commends the people’s understanding that the judiciary has fulfilled its duty and should not be disrespected by the Labour Party’s insensitivity and recklessness.
“It has become penchant for the Labour Party to accuse the federal government of interfering with the judiciary any time it loses a case in court, especially since the beginning of post-election trials. This is not the first time and it is in the character of the Labour Party to be selective in accepting the judgments of the court by always rejecting and deriding the court once any case goes against it. This attitude is unacceptable because it is an affront on the Judiciary which remains the last hope of the common man and one of the strongest safegaurds of our democracy. Every rational mind and lover of democracy should be bold in condemning this rascality.
“Thankfully, the good people of Aba rebuffed his preachments to violence as he was left alone to savour his loss. Abia PDP salutes the discernment of Abia people who understand that the Judiciary has done its work and should not be dragged to the mud by the insensitivity and recklessness of the Abia Labour Party which they never miss an opportunity to display anytime a judgment goes against them. Abia PDP calls on the vigilant Abia security agencies to keep a close watch on the sacked member and his supporters, agents and members of the Labour Party and warn them to desist from causing any breach pf the peace in Abia State.
“We also call on members of the PDP and the general pubic to remain steadfast, peaceful and calm as well as trust the ability of the leadership of the PDP to do the right thing to protect our democracy. PDP - Power to the People!.” Elder Amah said.
