Obinna Ichita, the immediate past member of the House of assembly member for Aba South state constituency, who was also the running mate of Dr Gregory Ibe, the Abia state gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the last general elections, recently responded to calls from good governance advocate Mr. Eke O Ako to list his notable achievements during his time in office. Ichita contended that his biggest accomplishment was ensuring the safety of Abians during the #EndSARS protest.
Mr. Eke O Ako, an advocate for good governance based in the United Kingdom, had previously called out former members of the Abia State House of Assembly who lost in the last general elections. He demanded a comprehensive list of their notable achievements while serving in office, particularly targeting Obinna Ichita, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) representing Aba South constituency.
My Eke wrote: “Obinna Ichita Happy new year bro! I was not antagonising you. I was simply asking questions about your achievements. You and I live in advanced societies, where these inquiries are normal.
“It’s up to you to tell us what you did or did not do. I was specific about outcomes of representation, which should not require private inquiries. They should be out there in the public domain.
“I don't think I was abusive. Looking forward to hearing from you, if you deem it fit. You also know that I do these inquiries regularly.
“Reading a different meaning into my entertainment post is a joke taken too far.I'm sure that we are not far off from each other in terms of academic brilliance, that is if you are better than me.“
Responding to the call, Ichita highlighted the critical role he played in safeguarding the people of Abia State during the #EndSARS protest. As mass protests erupted nationwide in October 2020, demanding an end to police brutality and the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Mr Obinna Ichita wrote “An abridged response: My biggest achievement and the greatest joy I have is the lives that were saved through my intervention and the coordinated engagement with the Governor, other Governors in the South East and Federal Security agents from elsewhere.
“I guess you have forgotten about EndSars. How many people knows how Abia was the safest state when the entire South East was boiling. These and Many others are things that one doesn’t need to trumpet.
“Up till this moment, that strategic intervention gives me joy. I know you don’t know what would have happened . But at least you have a peaceful place to visit when you come home. Some people made it possible!“
The former Aba South member of the 7th Abia Assembly directed Mr Eke O Ako to visit his Facebook page to see more of his achievements, he said “If you require further information about my activities in the House, please check the Facebook profile of Obinna Ichita and get back to me if you require further clarification.
“Lastly, I do not know why you issued a disclaimer about antagonism. I endured the most vicious state-sponsored antagonism. I strongly doubt if anyone can frighten us!
“Obinna Ichita is the only citizen of Abia state who is still court up till today with(the then) officials of the state government because he asked for accountability in governance. Port Harcourt/ the World Bank loan was the reason for our ordeal.
“I was branded an IPOB member, I was called a kidnapper, I was called an Arms dealer, I was attacked, my vehicle was destroyed, just because of Port Harcourt road.
“These facts are documented by the Attorney General of the Federation, The Inspector General of Police, The DG SSS, The National Security Adviser, and the Chief of Staff to the president.
“My scars in the struggle for Abia liberation are visible.Revolutionary engagement is beyond typing chaka-chaka on face book. We educated our people and opened their eyes. We were on ground. And we will do it again!” He ended.
