 Nyesom Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing rumors of his departure from the party. In a recent statement, Wike stated that he remains a card-carrying member of the PDP and is unwavered by the threats of expulsion from certain party chieftains. He assured that his stance with the party will become more evident during the electioneering period.

During the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election, Wike had expressed concerns regarding the PDP's internal power-sharing formula. He emphasized the need for the party to adhere to the zoning arrangement and allocate the presidential ticket to southern Nigeria. Despite the emergence of Atiku Abubakar, a candidate from northern Nigeria, as the PDP's primary election winner, Wike chose not to support him and instead aligned himself with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), resulting in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu.

The minister's decision to join the APC sparked debates regarding his PDP membership status. However, Wike clarified that he is still a member of the PDP and reiterated his support for Tinubu, the APC flag bearer for the 2023 election. In a press briefing in Abuja, he emphasized his unwavering loyalty to the PDP and addressed criticisms about his previous actions.

"I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)," Wike stated firmly. "Have you ever seen me change anything? The one I supported before, what happened? I have decided to take a break. As you see me now, everybody should carry their cross."

He further explained that his decision not to support the PDP's presidential candidate in the 2023 election was a calculated move and should not warrant calls for his suspension. Wike emphasized his advocacy for the party's constitution and highlighted the importance of focusing on governance at this time. He mentioned that he has been entrusted with an assignment by President Bola Tinubu and is fully dedicated to fulfilling it.

"Now is the time for governance. Now is the time to do your assignment," Wike stated. "The president has given me an assignment, and I am busy carrying out my assignment. When the time for politics comes, we would know who is where and who is not where."

Wike's remarks serve to clarify his position within the PDP and reaffirm his commitment to the party's principles. As the political landscape evolves, his actions will undoubtedly shape the course of the upcoming elections.
