In a letter addressed to the Honourable Minister for Works, the Umuwanwan Progressive Union Federated, represented by Chief Uzochukwu Uzosike, President-General, expresses deep concerns over the abandoned ACHINGALA-OBIZI-UDO-UMUNWANWA UBAKALA ROAD.

The letter Titled "SAVE OUR SOUL AND DIRECT THE CONTRACTOR HANDLING ACHINGALA-OBIZI-UDO-UMUNWANWA UBAKALA ROAD (BOLIV CONSTRUCTION COMPANY) TO GO BACK TO SITE BEFORE THE RAINS," highlights the failure of the contracted company to comply with the minister's instructions to expedite the project in September 2023.

The union's letter emphasizes the urgent nature of the matter, stating, "The above road project, which was renewed under the last administration, has been left abandoned." It further recalls the minister's visit to the Mbaise arm of the project on September 8, 2023, during which the contractor was instructed to accelerate the work to complete the crucial sections of the Umunwanwa-Ubakala arm before the rainy season.

Of particular significance is the fact that the Umunwanwa arm of the road runs through a 100,000-hectare rice farm owned by the Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority, a federal government agency. The completion of this road would not only enhance transportation but also contribute to food security in the region.

Regrettably, the contractor, Boliv Construction Company, has abandoned the project after completing only some earthwork. With the rainy season approaching, the community is deeply concerned about the dire consequences of leaving the road unfinished. If the road remains in its current state of disrepair, it will become impassable during the rains, severely affecting the livelihood and safety of the people.

The unions letter reads in full, “The above subject matter refers; I write to bring your attention as a matter of urgent concern regarding the abandoned road construction project above.

“The above road project which was renewed under the last administration has been left and abandoned.

“Honourable Minister Sir, you may recall that when you visited the Mbaise arm of the contract on the 8th September, 2023 you instructed the contractor to fastrack the work in other to complete the very delicate areas of Umunwanwa-Ubakala arm before the rainy season.

“The Umunwanwa arm of the road passes through a 100,000 hectares of rice farm belonging to a Federal Government Agency (Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority) there in Umunwanwa which is a very significant food security solution if constructed.

“Unfortunately, this very important road has been abandoned by the contractor (Boliv Construction Company) after some earthwork. As the rainy season approaches, I am deeply worried about the dire consequences of the unfinished road on our community if the road remain in its current state of disrepair, it will become impassable during the rains, severely impacting the livelihood and safety of our people.

“The deteriorating condition of the road poses a significant risk to the residence, especially in cases of emergencies regarding swift access to medical facilities or other essential services. Additionally, the already destabilized aggregate stability of the top soil due to the already done work will exacerbate flooding and erosion issues during the rainy season, further isolating our community and hindering economic activities.

“I understand Sir, that the responsibility of overseeing and completing the road construction lies within your esteemed Ministry of Works. I respectfully urge you to take immediate action to address this pressing issue and ensure the contractor (Boliv Construction Company) for the Achingala-Obizi-Udo-Umunwanwa-Ubakala Road construction fulfill their obligation without delay.

“Our community is in dire need of a safe and accessible road infrastructure that can withstand the upcoming rains and improve our quality of life. We implore you to prioritize the completion of Achingala-Obizi-Udo-Umunwanwa-Ubakala Road construction project as a matter of utmost urgency.

“We trust in your commitment to serve in the best interest of all Nigerians in line with Mr. President, H/E Bola A. Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Attached are some pictures of the said abandoned road project. Thank you for your attention to this matter.” The letter ended.
