 The immediate past Governor of Abia state, Dr Okezie Ikpeaze mourns the passing of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the first Civilian Governor of the old Abia State. Dr. Onu, who passed away at the age of 72 in Abuja, is remembered by former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as a politician of honor and integrity.


This was contained in a statement released by Barr Onyebuchi Ememanka, spokesperson for former Governor Ikpeazu, Dr. Onu’s death is described as a significant loss to the political landscape of Nigeria, particularly to the Igbo community whom he passionately represented.


Dr. Onu’s tenure as Governor from 1992 to 1993 is highlighted by Governor Ikpeazu for fostering peaceful coexistence and laying the groundwork for Abia State’s development. His legacy as an academic, administrator, and a politician who never compromised his principles is celebrated.


Governor Ikpeazu reflects on Dr. Onu’s national contributions, noting his unwavering commitment to integrity and patriotism. The former Governor offers prayers for Dr. Onu’s soul and extends condolences to his family and the people of the old Abia State.


In his words, "Dr Onu was an astute academic and administrator. He was calm, gentle and never played politics with bitterness.

“After his service in the State, he would go on to the national stage where he held different positions wherein he left legacies of honor and patriotism. His death has left a big vaccum in our political space.

"Perhaps, the greatest political legacy for which Dr Onu will be remembered is that he played politics with integrity and remained very consistent in his ideologies. Whether in the ruling party or in the opposition, he remained resolute to his ideals" Dr Ikpeazu said.


Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu’s legacy of honor and integrity in politics will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him said the Former Governor Ikpeazu praying for God to accept his gentle soul and to comfort his family and the entire people of the old Abia State.
