Nigerians across Abia state are lauding Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr, the dedicated representative of Obingwa-West State constituency in Abia state house of Assembly, for his instrumental role in halting the impending electricity tariff hike. This commendation comes as a result of Erondu Jnr's motion, which effectively suspended the tariff increase for a period of 10 months, sparing citizens from further financial strain.

In a recent conversation with Mr. Chime Onyema, a prominent businessman in Aba, Abia state, he expressed his gratitude towards Erondu Jnr for his timely intervention. Onyema highlighted the potential economic distress Nigerians would have faced if the tariff hike had proceeded as scheduled, particularly amidst the ongoing challenges following the removal of fuel subsidies.

"Nigerians would have suffered more economic hardship if the increase had taken place at the initial proposed date when the middle and lower class citizens were still struggling to cope with the negative effects of fuel subsidy removal on their households". Onyema said.

Similarly, artisans based in Umuahia, Abia state, namely Mr. Ikechukwu Mark and Mrs. Chibuzor Daniel, have joined in the chorus of praise for Erondu Jnr. They commended him for initiating the crucial motion during the 8th Abia Assembly session on June 29, 2023.

This motion, aimed at addressing urgent public concerns, garnered significant support from both the Federal House of Representatives and the National Assembly in Abuja, resulting in the suspension of the electricity tariff increase for the specified duration.

The artisans also emphasized the people-centric approach of Erondu Jnr, citing his dedication to alleviating financial burdens on Nigerians. They particularly noted the immense relief provided by the resolution, which prevented the anticipated tariff hike from taking effect on July 1, 2023.

However, amidst these commendations, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has voiced strong opposition to the proposed over 300 percent increase in electricity tariffs. They have warned of the adverse effects such a hike would have on various sectors, including local industries and the general populace.

NANS has called upon regulatory bodies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) and Distribution Companies (DisCos) to reconsider this decision, emphasizing the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerians due to inflation and rising living costs.

In a statement released by their National President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, NANS condemned the electricity tariff hike as oppressive and urged authorities to prioritize the welfare of citizens in their policies and decisions.
