A tragic incident occurred in Aba, where an innocent Abariba-born businessman, Mr. Emmanuel Michael Okocha, was shot and killed by rogue officers from the Rapid Response Squad of the Nigerian Police Force. This heartbreaking incident took place along MCC Abayi - Aba when Mr. Okocha refused to give them a bribe, despite having all his vehicle documents in order.

According to an eyewitness who was with Mr. Okocha in the car, they had traveled from Abiriba on Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, and entered Aba through the Osisioma flyover. As they approached Abayi Girl's Secondary School, they were stopped by a team of police officers who demanded to see the car documents and Mr. Okocha's driver's license. Mr. Okocha promptly provided the requested documents. However, after inspecting the papers, the officers began demanding a bribe (roja). When Mr. Okocha explained that he had nothing to give them after wasting his time, he started to drive away from the checkpoint. Shockingly, another officer standing in front of the car suddenly shot at him without any provocation.

As Mr. Okocha cried out in pain from being shot, the police team quickly fled the scene in their car. The eyewitness immediately rushed Mr. Okocha to the nearby Living World Hospital before contacting his attorney. Together, they went to the MCC Police Station, where the eyewitness identified the police team and the trigger-happy shooter. Despite undergoing surgery to save his life, Mr. Okocha tragically succumbed to his gunshot injuries on Friday evening.

The Abiriba community is now urging the Abia State Government, under their adopted son, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, to intervene and ensure that rogue officers in the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies understand that the lives of innocent Abia State citizens must be protected without compromise.

"The Abiriba community is deeply wounded and saddened by the unprovoked, reckless, and brutal murder of their promising young son. Late Chief Michael N. Okocha, a philanthropist and kind-hearted father of the victim, whose impact on the community can still be seen two decades after his passing, must be watching from the spirit world, hoping that Abiriba will unite to ensure that those responsible for his beloved son's untimely death receive the justice they deserve."

"This tragic incident serves as a constant reminder that the government needs to take stronger measures to curb the excesses of security personnel. They should understand that their duty is to protect lives, not take them. Firearms should only be used in extreme circumstances to defend against deadly attacks."

"May Mr. Emmanuel Michael Okocha not only rest in peace but also find rest in justice."
