Heavy rainfall on Wednesday night led to the escape of 119 inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger state.


Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory FCT Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service NCoS, confirmed the incident, explaining that the downpour caused significant damage to the custodial facility and surrounding buildings, including the destruction of its perimeter fence, facilitating the escape of 118 inmates.


“A heavy downpour that lasted for several hours on the night of Wednesday, 24 April 2024 has wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Suleja, Niger state, as well as surrounding buildings, destroying part of the custodial facility, including its perimeter fence, giving way to the escape of a total of 118 inmates of the facility.” Duza said.


Efforts to apprehend the escaped inmates are underway, with 10 already back in custody, as law enforcement agencies intensify their search. Duza highlighted the challenges posed by aging infrastructure in many correctional facilities, while also acknowledging ongoing efforts to modernize and construct new centers across Nigeria.


“The Service wishes to assure the public that it is on top of the situation and that they should go about their businesses without fear or hindrance,” He said


Assuring the public of their safety, Duza urged vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activity related to the escaped inmates.
