Umuafai Road Collapses Two Months After Reconstruction: Residents Call for Accountability | #NwokeukwuMascot

Umuahia, May 22, 2024 – The recently reconstructed Umuafai Road has collapsed just two months after its commissioning, raising concerns among the residents and sparking calls for greater accountability in public infrastructure projects.


Residents of the area, located in the capital of Abia State, documented the current state of the road in a video, highlighting the rapid deterioration and questioning the quality of the materials used in the construction. They expressed their frustration and disappointment, urging the government to address the issue promptly.


In addition to the failure of Umuafai Road, residents pointed out problems with another ongoing project, Dozie Way. They claimed that inferior materials were being used, which could lead to similar issues in the future. Their plea emphasized the need for the government, led by Governor Alex C. Otti, to ensure the prudent use of resources and to avoid wasting taxpayer money on substandard work.


"We call for a proper evaluation of other road projects, especially Dozie Way, which is currently being rehabilitated by the state ministry of works, to prevent a recurrence of such failures," said one resident.


The residents' concerns highlight a broader issue of infrastructure quality and resource management within the state. As these road failures come to light, there is increasing pressure on the administration to enforce stricter oversight and to ensure that public funds are spent effectively and transparently.
