In a startling twist at the Umuahia Township Stadium, the epicenter of the 2024 May Day Celebration, Abia state workers departed disheartened and incensed as Governor Alex Otti neglected to disclose the highly anticipated wage award.

What began as a day brimming with hope turned to despondency for workers who had anticipated positive news during the Workers Day festivities. Despite persistent demands from the Abia state chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for supplementary pay to ease economic strains, the state government remained silent on the issue.

Seven months prior, the Federal Government greenlit a wage award to counterbalance the repercussions of fuel subsidy removal. While other states swiftly implemented the directive, Abia lagged behind.

Eager workers, buoyed by enthusiasm, found themselves disillusioned as the Governor sidestepped their salary grievances. Confronted with stagnant wages amidst escalating commodity costs, workers vented their frustrations by exiting the Governor's speech.

In his address, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya, the Abia NLC chairman, reiterated the imperative of promptly implementing the wage award to alleviate workers' hardships. Disheartened by the Governor's reticence, Ogbonnaya acknowledged the workers' discontent and stressed the urgency of action.

As workers departed the event without the anticipated announcement, their departure underscored the enduring battle for equitable compensation in Abia state.
