Aba, Abia State -The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent attack on a military checkpoint in Aba, Abia State, which resulted in the deaths of four soldiers. The incident has sparked a significant response from the Nigerian Army, leading to mass arrests in the area.

In a press release, Kalu described the killing of the military personnel as "unwarranted, outrageous, unjust, cruel, and absolutely condemnable." He emphasized that the soldiers were performing their lawful duties when they were attacked, calling the act a severe affront to national security and order.

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, also addressed the broader implications of the attack, urging the residents of Aba to reject the ongoing sit-at-home order imposed by separatist groups. "Aba people are known for their enterprising spirit and technical skills, and they cannot be hoodwinked into thinking that locking up their shops and closing their businesses to stay at home is beneficial," he stated. He stressed that such orders are detrimental to the economic vitality and daily life of the people.

The Deputy Speaker highlighted the importance of Aba as the commercial hub of the South East, attracting individuals from various backgrounds. He appealed to the residents to uphold their tradition of hospitality and resist any form of violence, which he noted is contrary to the peaceful culture of Ndi Igbo. "Aba is the commercial nerve center of the South East and plays host to people from all walks of life. We must maintain our hospitality and not trade it for violence," Kalu urged.

In the wake of the attack, the Nigerian Army has intensified its operations in Aba, resulting in numerous arrests as they seek to restore order and apprehend those responsible for the killings. Videos circulating on social media show military personnel conducting house-to-house searches and detaining suspects.

The incident has raised tensions in the region, with community leaders and politicians calling for calm and cooperation with security forces to prevent further violence. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and stability of the area, while addressing the underlying issues that led to this tragic event.

The Deputy Speaker's condemnation and call for peace reflect a broader appeal for unity and resilience in the face of adversity, urging the people of Aba to stand firm against threats to their way of life and to continue fostering a community rooted in enterprise and hospitality.
