Uyo, Nigeria – Mrs. Josephine Philip Efiong, the widow of the late General Philip Efiong, the last leader of the Republic of Biafra, passed away on May 21, 2024, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Mrs. Efiong, who would have celebrated her 89th birthday on June 29, 2024, leaves behind a legacy intertwined with a significant chapter of Nigerian history.


General Philip Efiong played a pivotal role during the Nigerian Civil War, stepping in as the leader of the secessionist Republic of Biafra after General Odumegwu Ojukwu went into exile. Mrs. Efiong supported her husband through this tumultuous period, marked by intense conflict and profound human suffering.


Born in 1935, Mrs. Efiong's life spanned numerous significant events in Nigerian history. Her passing marks the end of an era for many who recall the Biafran struggle for independence and the subsequent reintegration of Biafra into Nigeria.
