In a recent turn of events, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, allegedly made a move that raises concerns about press freedom and the right to free expression in Abia State. During a press briefing, he ordered the expulsion of Kingsley Chibuike, a correspondent from ENYIMBA TV and RADIO LTD, without providing any explanation.

The press conference, held at the conference hall of the Abia State House of Assembly, was attended by high-profile officials including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, the Assembly liaison to the Governor, members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, and journalists from various media outlets.

Originally scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM, the briefing was delayed until noon. Just as it was about to start, Chibuike was escorted out by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker and the Secretary of the House Committee on Information. This abrupt action raised eyebrows and prompted speculation about the motives behind it.

Sources within the media community reported that journalists were instructed not to ask questions regarding the Speaker’s ongoing refusal to swear in Aaron Uzodike for the Aba North State Constituency. ENYIMBA FM investigations revealed that this directive came directly from the Speaker himself.

The backdrop to this incident involves a previous press conference where Speaker Emeruwa cited an unspecified legal restriction as the reason for his refusal to swear in Uzodike, despite a court order and a Certificate of Return issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

ENYIMBA TV and Radio Limited, the parent company of ENYIMBA 94.3FM, LEGEND 98.3FM, and ROSE 101.9FM, has been known for its critical reporting and its commitment to holding public officials accountable.

This incident raises serious questions about the state of press freedom in Abia and suggests a potentially organized effort to stifle freedom of speech and expression within the state. Observers and advocates for media freedom are calling for a thorough investigation into the actions of Speaker Emeruwa and the apparent restrictions placed on journalistic inquiry.
