Abia State Government Admits Partial Payment of Pension Arrears | #NwokeukwuMascot

 Alex Chioma Otti

In a recent interview with Jimi Disu on Daily Digest, Ferdinand Ekeoma, media adviser to Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, acknowledged that the state government has not fully paid the nine years of pension arrears owed to its retirees. This admission contradicts earlier statements made by Governor Otti, who had claimed that his administration had cleared all outstanding pension debts.

Governor Otti had previously assured pensioners during a gathering at Christ the King Catholic Church in Aba that their long-standing financial woes would be resolved by the end of that day.

"Many of you have been owed since 2014. By the close of business today, all of you will have reason to smile. Check your accounts," Gov Otti confidently declared.

However, Ekeoma clarified in the interview that the government's efforts were more modest in scope. "We are not claiming that all the arrears that were owed were paid, No!!" Ekeoma stated. He explained that the government prioritized paying off smaller pension amounts, focusing on retirees whose monthly pensions were relatively modest.

"In the course of the agreement, what we said was that some of these pensioners whose pensions were maybe, 100 thousand, 70 thousand, or 50 thousand, we can clear them. But those whose pensions run into millions every month, we won’t be able to clear that," Ekeoma explained.

This revelation has sparked mixed reactions among the pensioners, some of whom had hoped for complete settlement of their arrears. The state government's selective payment strategy highlights the ongoing financial challenges it faces in addressing pension obligations comprehensively.

The admission raises questions about the feasibility of the government's financial plans and the accuracy of previous public statements regarding pension arrears. As Abia State continues to navigate these financial difficulties, the pensioners remain hopeful for a complete resolution in the near future.
