Labour Leaders Protest Military Presence at Government Meeting Venue; Army Issues Denial | #NwokeukwuMascot
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed serious concerns regarding the presence of soldiers at the venue of its critical meeting with the federal government. In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the NLC reported that soldiers were stationed at the premises of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), where the negotiations were taking place.

The NLC's statement emphasized its stance against any perceived attempts to intimidate or blackmail labour leaders, warning that such actions would be met with resistance and could potentially prolong the ongoing strike action.
It further posted that “any attempt to intimidate, blackmail labour leaders at the negotiation table will be resisted while strike action will be further be prolonged”.
The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are currently on strike to protest the proposed minimum wage of N60,000 by the government, while the labour unions are demanding a substantial increase to N494,000. This strike has led to significant disruptions across various sectors in the country.
In response to the allegations, the Nigerian Army issued a statement refuting the NLC's claims. According to the Army's official Facebook page, the report of soldiers surrounding the meeting venue is false. The statement clarified that the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, attended the meeting with his standard military escorts.
The Army's statement urged the public to disregard what it described as "deliberate and misleading falsehoods" about the military presence at the meeting, reinforcing that there was no intent to intimidate the labour leaders.
The state reads, “The attention of Army Headquarters has been drawn to a false breaking news by NLC alleging that soldiers currently surround the venue of the ongoing meeting between NLC and the SGF.
“Kindly note that the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who is also attending the meeting, arrived at the meeting venue with his retinue of statutorily approved military escorts. Once the meeting is over, the escorts will lead the NSA from the venue .
“Kindly disregard the deliberate and misleading falsehood being peddled about the presence of the escorts at the meeting.” It said.
As the situation develops, the tensions between the Nigerian government and labour unions remain high, with significant implications for the country's workforce and overall stability.
