British Ambassador to Mexico Removed After Video Shows Him Pointing Assault Rifle at Staff Member | #NwokeukwuMascot

In a startling development, the British ambassador to Mexico, Jon Benjamin, has been relieved of his duties following the emergence of a video that shows him pointing an assault rifle at an embassy employee. The footage, which has circulated widely on social media, was first posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) and has caused significant controversy both in the United Kingdom and Mexico.


The video depicts Benjamin holding the firearm and pointing it at a staff member, whose face has been blurred in the footage. The incident reportedly occurred during an official visit to the Mexican states of Durango and Sinaloa in April, areas known for their significant drug cartel activity. A caption accompanying the video criticized Benjamin's actions, stating, "In a context of daily killings in Mexico by drug dealers, he dares to joke."


The Financial Times reported on Friday that the ambassador was dismissed from his post as a result of this incident. The UK Foreign Office confirmed the removal, with a spokesperson stating, "We are aware of this incident and have taken appropriate action. Where internal issues do arise, the FCDO has robust HR processes to address them."


Benjamin's term as ambassador officially ended in May, according to his LinkedIn profile. His biography on the UK government website notes that he served as the UK Ambassador to Mexico from 2021 to 2024. Before his assignment in Mexico, Benjamin had a long career in the Diplomatic Service, having joined in 1986. His previous postings included roles in Chile, Ghana, Turkey, Indonesia, and the United States.


The incident has sparked discussions about the conduct of diplomats and the responsibilities they bear, particularly in regions facing severe security challenges. Both Durango and Sinaloa are regions with a heavy presence of drug cartels, making the ambassador's actions especially insensitive in the current context of violence and insecurity.
