In a significant setback for the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles manager Finidi George faces an uphill battle to secure the services of Michael Olise and Lesley Ugochukwu.

Reports have emerged that the duo has been named in Thierry Henry's France U21 squad for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a move that complicates Nigeria's efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Olise and Ugochukwu, both highly regarded for their potential, have been on Nigeria's radar as the Super Eagles look to bolster their ranks. However, the inclusion of these talented players in France's Olympic preparations, as reported by Get French Football News (GFFN), significantly hampers Nigeria's pursuit.

France's Olympic campaign will see them face the United States at Marseille's Stade Vélodrome on July 24th, Guinea in Nice on July 27th, and New Zealand back at the Vélodrome on July 30th. The opportunity to represent France on such a prestigious stage, particularly on home soil, is a compelling incentive for Olise and Ugochukwu.

Finidi George watches on in his first Super Eagles session as coach.

The decision by France to call up Olise and Ugochukwu is a major blow to George’s aspirations of convincing the players to switch their international allegiance to Nigeria. The allure of competing in the Olympics for their country of birth presents a significant challenge to the Super Eagles' recruitment efforts.

With the Paris Olympics offering a platform for these young talents to shine, Finidi George and the Nigerian Football Federation must now employ extraordinary measures if they hope to persuade Olise and Ugochukwu to don the green and white of Nigeria.

The task ahead is daunting, but securing these players could be pivotal for Nigeria's future success on the international stage.
