The killing of Professor Yusuf Saidu, a distinguished academic and Vice Chancellor of Research and Development at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, was a case of mistaken identity by the bandits, some sources have claimed.

According to some of the sources, Professor Saidu and his driver were travelling through Kucheri in Zamfara State when their official vehicle, a blue-coloured Hilux, was mistakenly identified as a police vehicle by the fleeing bandits.

Newsmen had reported that the bandits opened fire, fatally shooting Professor Saidu and injuring his driver.

His body had been recovered and buried on Tuesday, following Islamic funeral rites, according to Zagazola Makama, a security analyst and counter insurgency expert on Lake-Chad disclosed in a post shared on X.

The academic community had mourned the killing of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, saying it was the loss of a renowned scholar and leader.

A senior staff of the University said the university community and beyond were in shock, mourning the loss of a distinguished academic

“The academic community is in mourning as news of his death spreads. Professor Saidu was a visionary leader who played a crucial role in shaping the university's research and development endeavors. His contributions will be deeply missed," he said.
