In a tragic turn of events, Ifunanya Miracle, a recent graduate from the Department of Quantity Surveying at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, lost her life while attempting to escape what she believed to be a robbery. Her friend, Peace, a student from the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital.

The incident occurred on the evening of June 9, 2024, after Ifunanya, known as Bliss, had closed her Point-of-Sale (PoS) business on the university premises. Accompanied by Peace, she boarded a tricycle when an unidentified passenger allegedly attempted to rob them of their valuables. In a desperate bid to escape, both students jumped from the moving vehicle. Tragically, Ifunanya hit her head on the ground and succumbed to her injuries. Peace survived but sustained varying degrees of injuries.

An anonymous student source revealed that the passenger later claimed the robbery attempt was a prank. This explanation has sparked outrage and confusion among the university community. The source recounted, “Miracle was well-known for her PoS business. It’s shocking to hear she died this way. We initially thought it was a robbery, but the man claimed it was a prank. It's incomprehensible.”

Another student echoed these sentiments, expressing disbelief and frustration. “The man claimed it was a prank after seeing the fatal outcome. This lady died because of someone’s reckless idea of a joke. The university's silence on the matter is troubling. Ifunanya had just graduated and her life was cut short unnecessarily.”

University spokesperson Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu confirmed the incident and clarified that it was indeed a prank gone horribly wrong.

“The university is fully aware of the situation. It was a very expensive prank, not a robbery. The students panicked and jumped from the tricycle, resulting in one fatality and one injury.

“The prankster, a final-year student, will face disciplinary measures after Ifunanya's burial. Both families have met with the university and reached an agreement regarding funeral and hospital expenses.”

Dr. Ojukwu added, “We deeply regret this incident. The university, the prankster, and the families involved are all devastated. We urge students to understand the severe consequences of such pranks. The individual responsible will face the repercussions of his actions.”

As the university community mourns the loss of Ifunanya Miracle, the administration's handling of the incident and the broader issue of campus safety and prank culture come under scrutiny.
