In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a snake-guarded shrine used for storing illicit drugs in the Igor community, Benin City, Edo State. The discovery was made during an operation by NDLEA operatives, who found a specially constructed storage hole hidden in a wall covered with wallpapers and adorned with fetish objects.

According to a statement released by the NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the operatives recovered various quantities of illicit substances from the shrine, including methamphetamine, Loud, Colorado, and Arizona—potent strains of cannabis.

The total weight of the seized drugs was 8.743 kilograms. The operation led to the arrest of two women, Sonia Ezumezu and Risikatu Tijani, after the demobilization of a large black snake that was guarding the shrine.

In another operation, NDLEA agents arrested two suspects, Obi Ferguson and Ernest Abanum, on June 22nd. This raid took place in the Usen forest in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State, where 209 kilograms of cannabis and a motorcycle were recovered.

Further illustrating the NDLEA’s ongoing efforts, operatives intercepted a white Nissan Frontier pickup truck on June 18th in Kiyi village, Kuje area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The vehicle, equipped with amber lights and bearing a fake registration number of a security agency, was loaded with 454 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa, weighing 340.8 kilograms. The drugs were procured in Uzeba, Edo State. A 76-year-old grandfather, Mr. Francis Omofa, was linked to the consignment and subsequently arrested.

These operations underscore the NDLEA’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and the ingenious methods traffickers use to evade detection. The agency continues to intensify its efforts to dismantle drug networks across the country.
