In a dramatic and humiliating encounter, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe was compelled to exit his bulletproof SUV by soldiers at a military checkpoint in Aba, Abia State. This incident occurred on Thursday, following the recent killing of five military personnel at Obikabia Junction, which has heightened tensions in the area.


Senator Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District, was en route to attend the funeral ceremony of the late Dr. Izuchi Nwosu, a former Local Government Chairman of Obingwa, at his Umuebi country home on May 30. The former senate minority leader’s vehicle was stopped at a military barricade in Itu Ngwa village. Despite efforts by his police security detail to intervene, the soldiers insisted that the senator exit his vehicle. 


Senator Abaribe was detained at the checkpoint for a period before being allowed to proceed. During the ordeal, he reportedly contacted Abia State Governor Alex Otti, requesting a statement to de-escalate the situation. However, Governor Otti declined, expressing concern that it might worsen the already tense atmosphere.


The incident did not end there. On his return from the funeral, Senator Abaribe was again stopped by soldiers and briefly detained before being released.


This confrontation underscores the heightened security concerns and the increased presence of military personnel in the region following the attack on military forces. The tension has raised concerns among residents and officials about the security and safety of the region.
