Two students from Saint Patrick's Model Schools Umuokahia, Aba, have taken on the challenge of addressing the persistent traffic congestion at the busy Waterside area in the Ogbor Hill axis of Aba, Abia State. Grace Uchendu, an SS3 geography student with aspirations of becoming an artist, and Onyekwere Valentine, an SS3 geography student aiming to become an engineer, have developed a comprehensive solution as part of their geography project.
Their Geography teacher, Mr. John Kalu, praised the students' initiative and creativity. "The students addressed the traffic congestion by proposing a series of infrastructural improvements," he explained. "These include the introduction of a roundabout, road expansion, and the construction of a flyover, all of which are detailed in their design.”
In addition to traffic management, the students focused on environmental enhancements. "They also proposed greening the area by planting trees to reduce environmental and noise pollution," Mr. Kalu added.
Recognizing the poor condition of the Waterside River, which is heavily polluted, the students suggested dredging the river to restore its ecosystem. "Their plan includes cleaning the river so it can once again support living organisms," Mr. Kalu noted.
Grace Uchendu and Onyekwere Valentine’s project not only highlights practical solutions to a local problem but also demonstrates the potential of young minds to contribute to urban planning and environmental conservation.
