Armed Arsonists Attack Anambra Local Government Headquarters: Police Report | #NwokeukwuMascot

In the early hours of Saturday, June 15, 2024, unidentified armed arsonists attacked the Ogbaru Local Government Secretariat in Anambra State, causing significant property damage. According to a report from the Anambra State Police Command, the assailants destroyed four vehicles on the premises during the assault.



Anambra State Police Commissioner Nnaghe Obono Itam condemned the attack, labeling it an act of cowardice. The police statement, issued by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the attackers arrived in large numbers, traveling on motorcycles and a vehicle. They began shooting indiscriminately upon arrival but encountered strong resistance from local vigilante operatives before the police response team arrived.



The police statement read: “The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Police Command, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has condemned the morning attack at the Ogbaru Local Government Area Headquarters Secretariat by armed arsonists. The attack, which resulted in the destruction of four patrol vehicles belonging to the vigilantes, has been described as an act of cowardice. Notably, there were no casualties."



“Preliminary information indicates that the assailants, arriving in large numbers on motorcycles and a vehicle, began shooting indiscriminately. However, they faced strong resistance from the Vigilante Operatives until the police response team arrived. Due to the superior firepower of the security operatives, the gunmen fled the scene. Unfortunately, four operational vehicles of the security operatives were engulfed in flames and severely damaged.”



In response to the incident, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led a joint security force comprising the Army, Navy, and other security agencies to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. Ongoing operations are being conducted to apprehend the culprits.

Commissioner Itam praised the bravery of the security operatives and assured the public of continued and strengthened collaboration in combating criminal elements in the state. He also promised that further developments would be communicated as they arise.



This attack highlights ongoing security challenges in Anambra State and underscores the need for enhanced measures to protect public facilities and ensure the safety of residents.
