Umuahia, Abia State – The Organized Labour in Abia State has issued a final seven-day ultimatum to the state government, threatening to initiate an indefinite strike if their demands remain unaddressed. This decision emerged from a general meeting held on Monday, July 8, 2024.

The ultimatum follows a previous 14-day notice, which expired without any resolution from the state government concerning the workers’ grievances. Central to the dispute are the issues of non-payment of the previous N30,000 minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative wage award approved by the Federal Government in October 2023.

In a formal letter addressed to Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, labour leaders expressed their profound disappointment over the government's failure to engage in dialogue or offer a resolution.

The letter, signed by Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia State, and Comrade Sir Enogwe Ihechi, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state, warned that if the government does not meet their demands within the stipulated seven days, the entire state workforce will commence an indefinite strike starting from Monday, July 15, 2024.

The correspondence underscores the workers' frustration and notes the absence of further communication with the government beyond the ultimatum. It was also copied to various key officials, including the Head of Service, the Senior Special Assistant on Labour Relations to the Governor, the Director of State Security Service, the Commissioner of Police, and the State Controller of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity in Abia State.

This move by the Organized Labour aligns with national directives and highlights the escalating tension between the state government and its workforce. As the deadline approaches, significant attention will be on the government’s response to prevent the impending strike, which could substantially disrupt state operations.
