ABSU Staff Stage Protest Over 13 Months of Unpaid Salaries | #NwokeukwuMascot

Uturu, Abia State — Academic and non-academic staff at Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) halted all school activities today in a mass protest against 13 months of unpaid salaries. This marks a significant escalation in the ongoing discontent among university staff regarding financial mismanagement.


The protest, which saw a large turnout of disgruntled employees, effectively shut down operations at the university. Staff members carried placards and chanted slogans, demanding immediate payment of their overdue salaries. The atmosphere was charged with frustration as many of the protesters decried the hardships they have faced due to the prolonged non-payment of wages.


This is the first time ABSU has witnessed such series of unrest in over a decade. Recall we had earlier reported how the Lecturers at Abia State University (ABSU) took to the streets in protest over unpaid salaries, urging Abia State Governor Alex Chioma Otti to address their grievances, underscoring a persistent issue that has yet to be resolved. Today's protest, however, is one of the largest in recent times, indicating growing impatience among the staff.


A spokesperson for the protestors stated, "We have been patient for too long. The university management and the Abia state government must address our grievances. Our families are suffering, and we cannot continue to work without being paid."


Efforts to reach the university administration for comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report. Meanwhile, students at ABSU have expressed concerns about the impact of the protest on their academic activities, with many worried about potential delays in their academic calendar.
