Abuja, Nigeria - Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has called on the federal government to adopt comprehensive geriatric outreach programs to elevate the nation's public health status. In a recent health series write-up, Dr. Ikpeazu highlighted the critical role such initiatives play in addressing health issues faced by the elderly population.

Speaking on Wednesday, Dr. Ikpeazu emphasized that geriatric outreach programs, which involve incentivizing local healthcare professionals to conduct health assessments, provide education, and offer tailored solutions to elderly citizens, have proven to be transformative in public health management.

“There are effective ways to elevate public health status in our country, one of which is through targeted geriatric outreach programs. These initiatives involve incentivizing local healthcare professionals, such as doctors and nurses, to conduct health assessments, provide education, and offer solutions to elderly residents in underserved areas. This approach not only addresses immediate health concerns but also empowers individuals with the knowledge to maintain their health proactively,” Dr. Ikpeazu stated.

During his tenure as governor, Dr. Ikpeazu's administration implemented a successful geriatric outreach program, which provided significant improvements in health literacy and access to care for the elderly in Abia State. The program focused on critical health priorities, including the importance of regular health check-ups, medication management, and recovery tracking.

“During my tenure as governor of Abia State, we successfully implemented a geriatric outreach program. This initiative was meticulously supervised and involved empowering local nurses to meet and educate older adults on health priorities. Our team focused on critical areas such as the importance of regular health check-ups, medication management, and tracking recovery progress. This program significantly improved health literacy and access to care among the elderly population, demonstrating that geriatric education is vital for public health improvement,” Dr. Ikpeazu noted.

Dr. Ikpeazu further stressed the necessity of adopting community-focused health interventions to reach remote and underserved regions. He asserted that the federal government, along with other state governments, can effectively address health disparities by integrating geriatric programs into their public health strategies.

“Our success in Abia State underscores the importance of community-focused health interventions. By integrating these practices, we can address health disparities and ensure that all residents, particularly those in remote or underserved regions, have access to essential health services and information,” Dr. Ikpeazu concluded.

The call to action from the former governor reflects a growing recognition of the need for targeted health programs to address the unique challenges faced by the aging population in Nigeria.

As the nation continues to grapple with public health issues, the adoption of geriatric outreach programs could be a pivotal step towards improving overall health outcomes and ensuring a healthier future for all citizens.
