The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) crashed in Kaduna on Monday morning, dispelling earlier reports that suggested a helicopter was involved.

In a statement issued on Monday, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, NAF's Director of Public Relations and Information, clarified the nature of the incident in response to widespread media coverage.

"Contrary to reports on social media and some traditional media outlets that a NAF helicopter had crashed in Kaduna earlier today, 1 July 2024, be informed that no helicopter crash occurred," Gabkwet stated. "Instead, a NAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) experienced a mishap after take-off for a mission near Rumji Village, approximately 15 kilometers from Base. Since it is an unmanned vehicle, there were no casualties on board or on the ground."

Gabkwet assured the public that a preliminary investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash. He emphasized that this incident would not hinder ongoing military operations.

Highlighting the need for accurate reporting, Gabkwet criticized the tendency to rush to press without verifying facts, noting, "The propensity to always rush to press in the name of 'breaking news' without a hold of the complete facts should be discouraged. Some outlets had misinformed Nigerians that a helicopter had crashed without clarifying from the NAF. This attitude negates the principles of developmental journalism, balanced reporting, and fairness."

He urged members of the media to seek verification from authorized military sources before publishing news to prevent misinformation.

Earlier reports by The PUNCH indicated that the crash occurred in Tami village, part of Kaduna State's Igabi Local Government Area, in the early hours of Monday. This clarification from the NAF provides critical details about the incident and underscores the importance of accurate and responsible journalism.
