In a surprising turn of events, the Abia State House of Assembly experienced a significant change in political dynamics as elected officials and House of Assembly members from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) defected to the Labour Party. This defection has resulted in the Labour Party gaining a clear majority in the Assembly.

The two officials who defected to the Labour Party are Hon Iheanacho Nwogu, representing Osisioma North State Constituency, and Hon Fyne Ahuama, representing Osisioma South State Constituency.

Their decision to leave the YPP came after a correspondence was read out during Plenary by the Speaker, Rt Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, announcing their expulsion from the party due to alleged "anti-Party activities." It was revealed that the officials openly supported the administration of Governor Alex Otti, which went against the party's stance.

In their statements, both Hon Iheanacho Nwogu, who serves as the Deputy Whip of the 8th Assembly, and Hon Fyne Ahuama expressed their full support for the Alex Otti administration, citing the Labour Party's commitment to justice and fair play as their reason for joining.

During the same Plenary session, the Nominees of the Judicial Service Commission were screened and cleared by the Abia Assembly. The Speaker also mentioned that significant legislative changes had been made and would be communicated to the Executive for further action.

The cleared nominees include Barrister KS Chibuzo Irobi, Mr Fynecountry Maduforo Iyioku, Professor Chukwu Udensi, and Engr Ogbonna Moses Emeka.

Plenary was adjourned to Wednesday, 15th May, 2024, for further Legislative business.
