Nigerian Senate Debates Bill on Free Lands for Fulani Herders: Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe Counters Proposal (Video) | #NwokeukwuMascot

The Nigerian Senate is currently debating a contentious bill proposing the allocation of free lands to Fulani herders for open grazing and ranching, commonly known as RUGA. The bill has sparked significant controversy, with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe leading the opposition against the proposal.

Recall we had in a video reported the Moment Senate President, Godswill Akpabio Insisted that ‘Cows Are Not Nigerian Citizens’ As Northern Senators Oppose Open Grazing Ban.

In the Senate session, Abia south Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe recalled a similar bill introduced by Senator Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso in the past, which was ultimately rejected. Abaribe criticized the current bill, describing it as one that affects a critical aspect of national life, exacerbating the ongoing herder-farmer conflicts, leading to the destruction of crops, and enabling the invasion of Nigeria by individuals claiming to be herders but who are not Nigerian citizens.

The former senate minority leader described the bill as "one that affects a critical part of our national life, leading to the disintegration of our society through incessant herder-farmer clashes and the destruction of plants. It has also resulted in the invasion of Nigeria by individuals claiming to be herders but who are not Nigerian citizens."

He further said, "As a member of the Senate, I recall this bill being introduced previously by Senator Kwankwaso. The ensuing debate highlighted several problems, which we must address if we are to fully understand and resolve the issues this bill presents," Abaribe stated.

Senator Abaribe also shared a personal account from his constituency in Obingwa Local Government Area. He described how local women approached him, reporting that herders had driven them away from their farms and threatened them with violence.

This situation necessitated a special arrangement, involving local police mobilization and intervention by the Local Government Chairman, to persuade the herders to vacate the farms.

Abaribe emphasized the widespread disputes and societal unrest that open grazing is causing in Nigeria. He urged his fellow senators to consider these issues carefully before making any decisions on the bill.

The debate continues, with the Senate divided on the best approach to address the herder-farmer conflicts and ensure peace and stability in the affected regions.
