Police Takes Over 23 Council Secretariats Amid Rivers Crisis, Two Security Personnel Killed | #NwokeukwuMascot

Two security operatives have reportedly lost their lives in the line of duty in Rivers State due to the ongoing local government crisis rocking the state.


The tragic deaths reportedly occurred in the Omuma Local Government Area on Tuesday and was linked to Tuesday’s invasion of the council headquarters at Eberi-Omuma by thugs and others loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration.


Meanwhile the Rivers State police command has reacted to the development.


In a press statement sent to obtained by newsmen and signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, it was confirmed that a police officer and a vigilante lost their lives.


“Following the breakdown of law and order in the various Local Government Council secretariats in Rivers State where supporters of the two political factions clashed over the tenure of Local Government Council Chairmen, a case of death was recorded at Eberi-Omuma, Omuma LGA, where a police officer and a vigilante were killed,” she said.


The police command said it had taken over critical infrastructures in the state to prevent breakdown of law and order.


“To forestall more bloodshed and prevent a further breakdown of law and order, the Police have taken over all the 23 Council Secretariats and some critical government infrastructure in the state. Conventional police officers and anti-riot police officers have been deployed to these facilities,” she said.


“While urging all groups and individuals to be law-abiding, the Command also warn anyone who intends to cause mayhem as we will not hesitate to impose the full weight of the law on them.”


“We also wish to ask the law-abiding residents and visitors in the state to go about their lawful businesses without fear. We are resolved to carry out our constitutional duty of protecting lives and property.” the statement added.
