In a decisive move to combat rising insecurity in Abia State, Governor Alex Otti has announced an increased bounty of 30 million Naira for information leading to the capture of the assailants responsible for the recent killing of five soldiers at Obikabia Junction, Aba metropolis.
This announcement was contained in a press statement signed by Mr. Kazie Uko, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, comes in response to the tragic incident on May 30, where unknown gunmen ambushed and killed the soldiers.
Governor Otti's commitment to enhancing security was further demonstrated during a recent visit from the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, at the Governor's residence in Umuehim, Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area. The Governor welcomed the Nigerian Air Force's (NAF) decision to establish an operational base in Abia, which he believes is timely given the Federal Government's approval for an airstrip in the state.
"We are immensely grateful for the Air Force's decision to set up a base in Abia. This development aligns perfectly with our plans for an airport in the state, and we have already allocated a site for this purpose," Governor Otti said. "The presence of the Air Force will significantly enhance our security efforts and support other agencies working to maintain peace in the region."
To facilitate the Air Force's swift deployment, Governor Otti has offered a temporary operational location in Umuahia, the state capital. Additionally, the state government will provide residences and vehicles for the Air Force personnel, ensuring they can commence operations immediately.
"We will give you a temporary site in Umuahia and provide all necessary resources. I believe this can be achieved within the next one to two months," the Governor assured, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Air Force in bolstering state security.
Governor Otti also expressed his gratitude to an Abia native residing in the United States, who contributed an additional five million Naira to the bounty, raising it to 30 million Naira. This gesture aims to incentivize the public to provide crucial information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Reiterating his administration's commitment to maintaining peace, Governor Otti stated, "We are determined to ensure that such incidents do not recur. Abia must remain a no-go area for terrorists, killers, kidnappers, and criminals."
During the visit, Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Nigerian Air Force and the Abia State Government. He commended Governor Otti's leadership and his dedication to improving the state's security and overall development.

"The establishment of an Air Force Base in Abia will enhance security not only in the state but across the entire South East Zone," Air Marshal Abubakar noted. He also expressed condolences for the loss of the soldiers and assured that the Air Force would work closely with other security agencies to reinforce peace and stability in the region.
Governor Otti concluded the meeting by empowering his Special Assistant on Security to liaise with the Air Force to ensure the immediate provision of all necessary resources, setting the stage for the swift establishment of the Air Force's presence in Abia State.
