In the ongoing fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, the Super Eagles of Nigeria chose to recite the 'Arise O Compatriot' anthem instead of the newly reinstated 'Nigeria We Hail Thee' during their match against Benin Republic. This surprising move occurred at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, despite recent changes in the national anthem.

President Bola Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law on May 29, reinstating the old anthem, "Nigeria We Hail Thee." This legislative change was formally announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a joint plenary session attended by Tinubu. The swift passage of the bill through both the Senate and the House of Representatives marked a significant shift in Nigeria's national symbols, replacing "Arise O Compatriots" with the previous anthem.

According to The PUNCH, the Super Eagles sang 'Arise O Compatriot' at the start of their match against Benin, indicating either a preference for the familiar anthem or a delay in the implementation of the new law within the team's protocol.

On the tactical front, Head Coach Finidi George opted for a strategic lineup, naming Terem Moffi and Ademola Lookman to spearhead the attack, while Victor Boniface started on the bench.

This match follows the Super Eagles' 1-1 draw with South Africa's Bafana Bafana in the third round of the qualifiers last Friday, which has increased the pressure on the team to secure a decisive victory in this round.

As the match unfolds, the choice of anthem and the team's performance remain focal points of discussion among fans and analysts, reflecting both the cultural and competitive stakes at play.
