Abia House of Assembly Speaker Acts Amidst Controversy: Inaugurates PDP Lawmaker After Court Ruling | #NwokeukwuMascot

In a pivotal turn of events in Abia State's political landscape, Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa of the Abia House of Assembly has officially inaugurated Aaron Uzodike as the lawmaker representing the Abia North State Constituency. This decision follows a crucial legal ruling from the Court of Appeal, amplifying scrutiny on the state's governance under the Labour Party (LP).






Aaron Uzodike, who ran in the 2023 general election for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), initially faced a setback when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Destiny Nwangwu of the Labour Party as the winner. Dissatisfied with this result, Uzodike challenged the election outcome in court.






On November 27, 2023, the Court of Appeal in Lagos delivered a decisive judgment that nullified Nwangwu's election and mandated the immediate withdrawal of his certificate of return. The court declared Uzodike the rightful winner and instructed INEC to issue a fresh certificate of return to him.








This legal decision has significantly altered the balance of power in the Abia State House of Assembly. Following Uzodike's swearing-in, the PDP now holds a majority with 12 members. The Labour Party has 11 members, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds one seat.

However, The leadership of the Assembly is as the time as this report composed of Speaker Emeruwa Emmanuel (LP), Deputy Speaker Austin Okezie Meregini (LP), and Majority Leader Uchenna Okoro. Notably, the position of Minority Leader remains vacant, with unresolved disputes over the true majority in the house since the 8th Assembly’s inauguration.








Speaker Emeruwa's move to inaugurate Uzodike amidst mounting pressure underscores the ongoing tensions within the state's political arena. The PDP’s majority shift is expected to intensify scrutiny of the Labour Party's governance, revealing deeper concerns about electoral integrity and legislative management in the region.
