Enugu, Nigeria – Protests have erupted in Enugu over the alleged killing of a popular ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, known as “Igbo Jah,” by Nigerian police officers attached to the anti-cult unit of the Enugu State Police Command.

The musician was reportedly shot on Friday evening while leaving the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters after a friendly visit. According to eyewitnesses, an officer opened fire, striking Mba, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

This incident follows another police-involved shooting nearly two weeks earlier, where officers on a stop-and-search operation allegedly shot and killed Smith Odinaka along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. The Enugu State Police Command has yet to apprehend those responsible for the previous incident on October 13.

Videos of Mba’s lifeless body in a pool of blood have circulated widely on social media, with users expressing outrage over what has been described as an “accidental discharge” by the police. Social media account Naija Trend, which shared the footage, posted: “Popular Ogene Musician ‘Igbo Jah’ Has Tragically Passed After Being Shot By Anti-Cult Police Officer In What Has Been Described As An ‘Accidental Discharge’ While Performing In Enugu.”

Enugu State Police Command spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the tragic incident, stating that the officer involved had been arrested and detained. Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu has extended condolences to Mba’s family and pledged that those responsible would face disciplinary action.

“A male Police Inspector serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Enugu State Police Command has been arrested and detained for the alleged murder of a male traditional Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo Jah,” Ndukwe said. “The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to conduct a full-scale investigation to facilitate appropriate disciplinary actions against the officer involved.”

Commissioner Uzuegbu also urged calm among Mba’s family, friends, and supporters, assuring the public that justice would be pursued diligently.

The tragic incident has amplified calls for accountability and reform within the police force, as demonstrators in Enugu demand immediate action to prevent further civilian deaths at the hands of law enforcement.
