A recent announcement by the Abia State Government, detailing free transportation for indigent Abians to return home for the festive season, has drawn criticism over its lack of clarity and timing.

The statement, issued through the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Chioma Otti, outlined departure dates that had already elapsed by the time of publication, leaving many potential beneficiaries confused and excluded.

The statement, titled “PRESS RELEASE: FREE TRANSPORTATION FOR INDIGENT ABIANS,” was shared on the evening of December 22, 2024. It provided a schedule of departure dates, including December 20 for Jos to Umuahia, December 21 for Abuja to Umuahia, and December 22 for Maiduguri to Umuahia—all predating the release of the information.

The announcement read in part: “The Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti OFR, has once again approved and mobilized Free Round-Trip Transportation for nearly 1,000 indigent Abians identified without any means but interested in returning home to celebrate the 2024 Yuletide Season with their families back home from selected popular routes.”

It further detailed routes, departure dates, and return schedules:

Kaduna - Umuahia | Departure: December 22, 2024 | Return: January 5, 2025.

“Jos - Umuahia | Departure: December 20, 2024 | Return: January 6, 2025.

“Kano - Umuahia | Departure: December 24, 2024 | Return: January 6, 2025.

“Niger - Umuahia | Departure: December 23, 2024 | Return: January 4, 2025.

“Maiduguri - Umuahia | Departure: December 22, 2024 | Return: January 10, 2025.

“Abuja - Umuahia | Departure: December 21, 2024 | Return: January 4, 2025.

“Lagos - Umuahia | Departure: December 21 and 22, 2024, with additional trips using 29 buses.

The statement also highlighted that the government had partnered with reputable transport companies to ensure safety and efficiency, with arrangements coordinated through Abia State Liaison Offices in Lagos and Umuahia.

However, the timing of the announcement has overshadowed its intent. Critics argue that the late publication effectively excluded many indigent citizens who could have benefited from the initiative.

“How can the government expect people to utilize a service when the information is released after the scheduled dates?” questioned a concerned Abian who spoke anonymously.

The free transportation initiative, while commendable in its objective, has raised questions about planning and communication within the administration. Observers have urged the government to improve its communication strategies to ensure that similar programs in the future reach the intended beneficiaries on time.

Efforts to reach the Chief Press Secretary for clarification were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
