The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Abia State branch, has announced plans for an indefinite peaceful street protest and the resumption of a suspended strike action over the alleged failure of the state government to meet its financial obligations to judiciary workers. This was contained in a statement obtained by www.nwokeukwumascot.com on December 24, 2024.

In the statement signed by Comr. Prince Chinedu Ezeh, Chairman of the Abia State JUSUN, and Comr. Chibueze Nwachukwu, Secretary, the union accused the state government of a calculated attempt to undermine the judiciary’s autonomy and financial independence. They further alleged that the state government has flagrantly violated agreements reached with judiciary workers, including its refusal to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage for judiciary staff, despite entreaties from various stakeholders.

The union disclosed that the peaceful protest is scheduled to commence on Monday, December 30, 2024, across major streets in Umuahia. If their demands are not met by midnight on Sunday, December 29, 2024, the union plans to resume its suspended industrial action on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

JUSUN’s demands include the payment of November and December 2024 salaries, the implementation of the new minimum wage, and the release of other constitutional entitlements allegedly withheld by the state government. The union emphasized that these funds must be made available to their Heads of Courts to avert the planned actions.

Union members have been directed to assemble at the High Court Headquarters on December 30, 2024, dressed in black attire with union caps or T-shirts, as a sign of solidarity. The statement also called on members to widely disseminate the information through social media and other platforms and to document the protest using phones and recording devices.

JUSUN assured its members that the planned protest and strike would persist until all salaries and entitlements are fully paid. The union also confirmed that relevant security agencies have been informed of their intentions to ensure a peaceful demonstration.

The leadership of JUSUN reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of judiciary workers and urged members to remain united in the struggle. The statement concluded with the union’s rallying cry, “Solidarity Forever! Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta!”

This development highlights ongoing tensions between the Abia State government and judiciary workers, raising concerns about the potential impact on the administration of justice in the state. As of the time of filing this report, the state government has yet to issue an official response to the union’s allegations and demands.
